A Town in the Woods
There is a place in the world called Bushwick. From the Dutch word “boswijc” it literally means a “town in the woods”. It sits in the northern part of Brooklyn, New York, USA. There are trees yes, but not woods anymore. Tiny micro parks, old worn-out mansions, middle-income housing and refurbished factory buildings line the streets. It’s in those factory buildings where thousands of artists have come to live and make work and it’s there that I met Ryan Manchester and Shanda, the two friends who make up We Are The Wilderness.
A sweet indie band with thoughtful lyrics and memorable songs, they are good people making good art. They also did the music which is the backbone to the GLOBALL video. As important as the work they did for the video is also something very valuable: they got GLOBALL. When I told them about the project Shanda said: “Connectivity creates responsibility”. Ryan added: “Connectivity is an act of service”. True words indeed.
Shanda once explained the name to me and it’s perfectly stated in this article "‘We’ is all of us. The function is inclusive, just as music should be. It’s for everyone, if it speaks to you. It’s tiring to keep up with trends and the specificity of persona that certain types of indie music require, and it reminds us we are all connected and not required to be anything more than what we already are. The wilderness is something that can be anything known or unknown. We live in a city, in organized streets, walls and rules, but there is constant chaos and constant uncertainty. The opposite can be said about nature and the wilderness. Where some humans find the wilderness to be “uncivilized and chaotic” it contains rigid structure and balance. We need to account for both ends of the spectrum in order to maintain equilibrium. The name reminds us to appreciate this balance, to cultivate awareness and care for it. Not just the human experience, but everything that makes up our world.“
I get it. You get it. Now we get it, here in the woods. Here in the wilderness.
We Are The Wilderness offered their music as one of our IndieGoGo perks. I’ll post more about that later, but for now, visit the link below. We thank you.
